Russia unhappy with Canadian visa regime

A Russian diplomat in Canada has voiced his concerns about Canada’s strict visa regime for Russian citizens.

Canada airport Russia unhappy with Canadian visa regime“We believe that it should be the procedure of all countries to make the movement of people easier but to our surprise, Canada has made it tougher,” said Andrey Varlamov, consul for the Russian Embassy in Ottawa.
He gave as an example Canada’s visit visa application form which asks for information on an applicant’s children, brothers and sisters, and present addresses and occupations, dates of employment, employers name, telephone and address, and the applicant’s monthly salary.
“It seems like a form you’d use if you’d want to emigrate, but instead, it’s the form you fill out to come to Canada for a few days, on business, or for a vacation,” Varlamov said.
“Not all people who would like to visit Canada are illegal immigrants,” he added.
Canada requires nationals of many Countries around the World to apply for a visit visa. Canada recently removed the visit visa requirements for citizens of some Eastern European states that joined the EU in 2004, but continues to require visas from citizens of other former Communist Countries and for nationals of a number of developing Countries around the World.
Canada’s strict visa regime is similar to the United States and a number of other Countries, and requires applicants for business or pleasure visas to prove that they will leave within the validity of their visa by showing that they have a reason to return, such as a job to go back to, a property in their home Country, or investments in their home Country.

Canada extends Working holiday visas for Irish Nationals

Under new rules, Canada has increased Canadian working holiday visa allocation to Ireland by 1,000 and will now permit Irish people to apply for a second visa.

According to a recent announcement by the Canadian Government, the total number of working holiday visas allocated to Irish nationals have increased from 4,000 visas last year to 5,000 this year. The changes will benefit Irish nationals between 18 and 35 years old who are applying for the one-year visa programme.

As a result of global economic crisis, more and more Irish nationals are likely to seek opportunities to move overseas in order to escape from the financial downturn and to find suitable jobs. Canada seems to have become the favorite destination for immigration for Irish residents. The number of Irish moving to Canada has increased by 80 percent since 2007. According to Ray Bassett -Irish Ambassador to Canada, 2010 saw 4,200 Canada working holiday visas issued for Irish citizens and nearly 3,462 Irish people getting Canadian permanent residency.

Thanks to these changes, from this year Irish people will be entitled to apply for a second 1 year working holiday visa instead of being restricted to just a single visa. This will allow thousands of Irish nationals already in Canada to make an application to live and work in Canada for a second year. Mr. Bassett asserted that the year 2011 is likely to see the greater demand for Canadian visas.

UAE imposes visa fees on Canadians

Canadians considering a vacation to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) may be put off by the Middle Eastern country’s decision to charge citizens up to CA$1,000 for visas.

Commencing earlier this week, the visa charges are questionable on account that the fee does not apply to any other Western country, The Globe and Mail reported.

The source said the UAE is back lashing against the Canadian government’s refusal to increase Dubai based carrier Etihad Airlines and Emirates landing rights in Canada.

In retaliation to Canada’s rejection, the UAE dispelled Canadian soldiers from a military base in Dubai late last year and even threatened to withdraw Canadian-made BlackBerry phones from the market, the source reported.

Up to 25,000 Canadian working and living in the UAE could be affected by the decision to change the policy.

According to the source, it is CA$250 for a 30 day visa, CA$500 for a three month visa and CA$1000 for a six month visa.

“The decision to impose visas on Canadians travelling to the UAE was made by the UAE in 2009 and is now being implemented,” Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon spokesperson Melissa Lantsman said.

Transit Visa Canada

Visitors from certain countries will need a transit visa for Canada. A Transit Visa is a type of Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) required by anyone from a non-visa-exempt country who is travelling through Canada to another country and whose flight will stop in Canada for less than 48 hours. There is no cost for a transit visa but the application process is the same as that for the TRV.

How to Apply for a Transit Visa

The Temporary Resident Visa (TRV) has three types: single entry, multiple entry and transit. To apply for any one of these types of TRV, fill out the two-page application for a Temporary Resident Visa Made Outside of Canada or call the nearest Canada Visa Office. At the top of the application, you will choose the box named “Transit.” Gather the necessary documents and mail in or take the application to a Canada Visa Office. You will not have to include a payment as the Transit Visa is free.

When to Apply for a Transit Visa for Canada?

Apply for a transit visa for Canada at least 30 days in advance of your departure or allow eight weeks if mailing it in.

Good to Know about Applying for a Transit Visa for Canada

Visitors must apply for a transit visa for Canada from their country of residence. You may not apply for a visa upon your arrival in Canada.

Unless told otherwise, travel agents or cruise lines will not take care of your transit visa – it is your responsibility.

Best Advice: Call Canada Embassy in your country  with any questions long before your departure.

Visiting Canada: Who is eligible

To visit Canada, you must:

  • have a valid travel document, such as a passport;
  • be in good health;
  • satisfy an immigration officer that you have ties, such as a job, home and family, that will take you back to your country of origin;
  • satisfy an immigration officer that you will leave Canada at the end of your visit; and
  • have enough money for your stay. The amount of money you will need can vary with the circumstances of the visit, how long you will stay and whether you will stay in a hotel or with friends or relatives. For more information, ask the Canadian visa office in your country or region.

You may also need:

  • a temporary resident visa, depending on your citizenship (see Visas and exemptions below);
  • a medical examination; and
  • a letter of invitation from someone who lives in Canada.

Travel documents

Transport companies, such as airlines, must ensure you have proper, valid travel documents when you enter Canada. If you do not have the proper documents, you may be delayed or denied boarding.

On March 11, 2010, CIC amended the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations to clarify the factors used to determine which travel documents can be used to apply for a visa, and to travel to or enter Canada.

Under these Regulations, the following travel documents are considered unreliable and are not acceptable for entry into Canada:

  • any passport claiming to have been issued by Somalia;
  • non-machine readable passports issued by the Czech Republic;
  • temporary passports issued by the Republic of South Africa; and
  • provisional passports issued by Venezuela.

Ask Canada Embassy in your region for more information.
