Malaysian visa office to open today in India

Getting a visa for Malaysia in Calcutta will become faster and easier with the southeast Asian country opening its visa application centre in the city on Wednesday.

VFS Global, an outsourcing agency, is setting up the centre in Shyambazar. “Visa applications can be submitted at the centre. After screening, they will be sent to the Malaysian high commission’s office in Delhi. After processing, the passport with visa documents will be sent back to the centre,” said Sanjay Budhia, the honorary consul for Malaysia in Calcutta.

“Once the centre starts functioning, the waiting period for a visa will be reduced from seven to eight days to four days,” said Budhia. “We are trying to work out a process to send the passport and visa papers to the applicant’s house directly.”

Malaysia high commission officials said Calcutta was the fifth city in the country where a visa application had been set up. Such centres were set up in Mumbai and Hyderabad in 2010 and in Delhi and Chennai this year.

The Calcutta office will remain open from 8am to 3pm. “The timing will be convenient for the applicants,” said Khairi Azali Bin Ibrahim, counsellor (immigration), Malaysian high commission, New Delhi.

The tourist traffic from India to Malaysia has been increasing over the past two years. In 2009, 5.9 lakh people from India had visited Malaysia. Last year, the figure rose to 6.9 lakh. “This year we are expecting 7.5 lakh visitors from India,” said Budhia.

High commission officials said around 500 visa applications were received from eastern India every week.

Tour operators said direct flight connectivity between Calcutta and Kuala Lumpur had increased passenger traffic over the past year. Low-cost airline Air Asia has started direct flights between the two cities from 2010. “Malaysia is fast becoming a hot tourist destination. Business and conference travellers, too, go to the country from this part of India,” said Anil Punjabi, chairman (east), Travel Agents Federation of India.

Malaysia confident of continued visa-free travel to Britain

Malaysia is confident that its nationals, except students, will continue to enjoy visa-free travel to Britain.

uk visa Malaysia confident of continued visa free travel to Britain

Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said this was based on proactive measures taken by Kuala Lumpur during the past year on the visa issue as well as strong Malaysian engagement with Britain.

Speaking at a joint press conference with Britain’s Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Jeremy Browne after the signing of a bilateral memorandum of understanding (MoU) on cooperation on immigration, Hishammuddin said the MoU would further strengthen trust between the two countries on this matter.

“One area we can confirm is the visa issue…as you all know there’s no requirement for Malaysians to have the visa, which was an issue before. I think that’s based on a very strong engagement and building of processes between (the two) countries and agencies concerned. And the signing of the MoU will strengthen that arrangement even further.

“So, issues such as withdrawal of visa for Malaysian nationals with children in the United Kingdom and all that will not crop up, I hope, in the future, provided that Malaysians who do go to the UK behave themselves,” he said.

Malaysia was represented at the signing by Deputy Home Minister Datuk Wira Abu Seman Yusop and Britain by Browne.

Last year, there were reports that Britain may revisit its proposal to impose visa requirements on Malaysians if the issue of overstaying was not handled properly.

As of January last year, reports indicated that there were about 20,000 Malaysian overstayers in Britain.

“There were worries that the visa-free travel to Britain for Malaysians may be withdrawn but it’s clear that our engagement (with Britain) over the past year has inspired confidence in the UK government that Malaysians are still (qualified to enjoy) visa-free travel to the UK.

“This should give a lot of comfort to Malaysian parents who’re very concerned in the beginning (that) there’s going to be a new policy (on the imposition of visa requirements on Malaysians).

“But clearly by engaging and having understanding such as this (MoU), it’ll allay fears that many Malaysian parents have,” he said.

Hishammuddin said Kuala Lumpur hoped to sign a security agreement with London during Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak’s official visit to Britain scheduled for July, that may help resolve some of the issues involving Malaysians who were staying illegally there.

Taiwanese to get visa-free privileges from Malaysia

Malaysia will grant visa-free privileges to Taiwanese passport holders by the end of the month at the earliest, Chinese-language newspapers in Malaysia quoted Malaysian Tourism Minister Ng Yen Yen as saying Tuesday.

According the reports, Malaysia’s Foreign Ministry has informed Taiwan’s authorities of the decision.

Ng said, however, that the visa-free measures will only be implemented by the end of the month because there are still technical details that need to be discussed.

Malaysia stopped issuing landing visas across the board Aug. 15 last year in a bid to prevent foreign migrant workers from abusing the program, noting that 75,462 people who entered the country on landing visas overstayed between 1996 and 2009.

Prior to the ban, Malaysia had offered landing visa privileges to Taiwanese citizens since 2009.

The Southeast Asian country’s decision to stop issuing landing visas was part of its efforts to grapple with the increasingly serious problem of overstaying visitors from China, India and Bangladesh, who abused the system by entering visa-free and then working illegally.

The Taiwanese authorities had asked Malaysia not to include Taiwan on the list of countries that have abused the program, as the vast majority of Taiwanese visitors to the country are relatively wealthy and very far from being “migrant workers.”

Taiwanese citizens make more than 200,000 visits to Malaysia annually, according to statistics.

Prime Minister Erdogan appeared at a joint news conference after meeting with Malaysian Prime Minister Mohamed Najib bin Abdul Razak and said that they agreed to lift visa procedures between the two countries.

“We are also planning to launch direct flights between Istanbul’s Sabiha Gokcen airport and Kuala Lumpur,” he said.

Erdogan said that Abdul Razak was the first Malaysian prime minister paying a state visit to Turkey in 28 years.

“We will sign a free trade agreement between Turkey and Malaysia this year. Such an agreement will add momentum to our economic and commercial relations. Currently, our trade volume is about 1.2 billion USD. We can increase it up to 5 billion USD. We are going to attend Turkey-Malaysia Business Forum in Istanbul tomorrow. We will tell our businessmen that we are ready to extend full support to mutual investments. Our businessmen can also work together in the third countries,” he said.

Malaysian Prime Minister Abdul Razak, on his part, said that he invited Prime Minister Erdogan to Malaysia by the end of 2011 to sign strategic cooperation agreement and free trade agreement.

“These two agreements will mark beginning of a new era in Turkey-Malaysia relations. There will be no more visa procedures between our countries,” he said.

He added that Turkey and Malaysia could develop an exciting cooperation in oil and natural gas.

Following the press conference, Prime Minister Erdogan hosted a banquet in honor of his Malaysian counterpart.

Australia, Malaysia to grant Taiwan visa privileges soon

Taiwan passport holders are expected to face simpler procedures to travel to Australia and Malaysia by the end of the first half of this year, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said Tuesday.

Malaysia is likely to grant Taiwanese travelers visa-free treatment by the end of March, and Australia is likely to offer electronic travel authority (ETA) services online by the end of June, said Matthew Lee, director-general of the MOFA’s Department of East Asian & Pacific Affairs.

In the case of Australia, Taiwanese passport holders are currently eligible to apply for an ETA, which is the equivalent of a visa and issued electronically by Australia’s Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC).

But they must do so manually rather than online, and in the future, Australia is expected to provide the more convenient online service to Taiwan passport holders with registered permanent residence, Lee said at a press briefing.

It will hold off, however, on discussing granting the privilege to the group that gives it the most concern — passport holders who do not have registered permanent residence — Lee added.

The Malaysian Cabinet has reached a consensus to grant Taiwanese visitors visa-free treatment, and an official announcement could be made in the first quarter, according to Lee.

Malaysia canceled visas on arrival for all countries on Aug. 15 last year, claiming that many visitors had abused the privilege and overstayed the visas they received. Taiwan has allowed Malaysians to visit Taiwan without a visa since 2002.
