Under the new agreement, holders of diplomatic, service and special passports are exempted from visa requirement, Iran’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

Earlier, the Philippines Foreign Ministry hosted the third meeting of the Joint Consultative Committee between the Islamic Republic and the Southeast Asian country.

The first deputy-ministerial meeting between the two Asian nations was also attended by the Philippines Foreign Minister Raul Manglapus.

The talks also focused on the promotion of bilateral ties and cooperation on ways to fight organized crimes, such as drug and human trafficking, terrorism, and money laundering.

The officials also highlighted the need for direct flights between Tehran and Manila, and expressed hope that the agreements reached in the meeting would help further cooperation between the countries in the fields of commerce, education, and tourism.

“I don’t know why visa is hard for Iranians to get at the Philippine Embassy there,” Rouzbehani told reporters during the celebration of the Iranian National Day held in Makati City last February 10. “It’s always been that way.”

Based on available data, a total of 5,000 Iranian tourists visited the Philippines in 2010.

Currently there are an estimated three thousand Iranians who are residing in the Philippines. On the other hand some 1,500 Filipinos, most of them married to Iranians, are now working and staying in Iran.
