Italy, Sweden favour visa-exemption for Turks

Italy and Sweden expressed support on Turkish nationals’ visa-free travel to European states, TRT English reported.

Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini aid they will do everything to change this unacceptable attitude, while his Swedish counterpart Carl Bildt said if Europe shuts its doors to new members, it will be preventing many possibilities in the future.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said Turkey will continue to be persistent on visa exemption for Turkish citizens.

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu held separate meetings with Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bild and Italian Foreign minister Franco Frattini in İstanbul to discuss the situation in Libya and Turkey-European Union relations.

The three ministers then met at the lunch, after which they held a news conference. Visa-exemption for Turkish nationals was taken up in detail.

Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said “We will continue our persistence on the issue. Principally, Turkey doesn’t expect an attitude different from the one shown to any other country. We ask for the same standards which were applied to other countries. We expect this understanding from the European Union as a whole. As we hope, with the help of our friends in the Union, there won’t be any more obstructions in Turkey-EU relations.”

Guest Ministers also expressed uneasiness over the same issue.

Italia’s top diplomat Franco Frattini said “I am disappointed over the double standard applied by European authorities. We see that Europe begins to act unwillingly when it is Turkey’s tun on the cisa exemption. We will make our best to prevent this unacceptable attitude.”

Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said Europe will be closing its doors to future possibilities if it closes its doors to new members.

On creating a no-fly zone over Libya, the ministers agreed that Libyan people should be listened to first and imposing solutions should be avoided.

UK talks up climate as seeks to boost

The British government made tourism a key part of its economic recovery on Friday, looking to dispel what it called a myth that Britain is a wet, cloudy country offering poor value.

It also set out its plans to remove other bugbears of visitors by making it easier to obtain entry visas, reducing the amount of time spent at passport controls and speeding up airport check-in times.

“You can do most things in Britain for 11 to 12 months of the year. Our weather is substantially better than many people think,” tourism minister John Penrose said at the launch of its tourism policy.

“The government sees it (tourism) as a key element in our plans to grow the economy and get Britain back on its feet.”

The 10-month old Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition believes Britain’s tourism industry could help the economy at a time of public spending cuts, drawing on the opportunities offered by high-profile celebrations including Prince William’s wedding to Kate Middleton in April and next year’s Olympics.

Tourism is currently Britain’s fifth-biggest industry, worth about 90 billion pounds to the economy.

As part of its strategy, the government will push to make entry visa applications quicker, simpler and more convenient, without compromising national security. It will also share visa centres with other friendly nations, reducing the vast distances some people have to travel in larger developing countries.

It also wants to increase the number of online applications from 35 percent to more than 90 percent by the end of 2012.

The government’s blueprint also calls on airlines and airport operators to work on reducing the need for long check-in times, while it will introduce more e-Passport gates at entry ports to speed up the passport control process.

Officials will discuss with airlines, airport operators, passenger groups and regulators on how to collect and publish data on transit times. The UK Border Agency will publish details of its performance against national targets.

The government hopes the measures will help generate four million extra overseas visitors during the next four years, bringing in an extra two billion pounds worth of visitor spend.

It also wants to entice Britons to stay at home for their holidays, and will consult on lengthening the tourism season by moving the May 1 Bank Holiday, or Labour Day, to earlier or later in the year, potentially drawing opposition from unions.

Israel, Ukraine cancel visa requirements

Tourism Ministry says deal between two countries will increase number of Ukrainian visitors by 40%. Israelis traveling to the Ukraine no longer need an entry visa, and Ukrainians do not need a visa to enter agreement signed between the two nations.

The Ministry of Tourism estimates that the development will raise the number of Ukrainians traveling to Israel by 40% compared to last year. Up to 140,000 tourists are expected to come from the Eastern European coutry in 2011, contributing an estimated $100 million to the Israeli economy.

In 2010, 292,000 passengers boarded flights on the Israel-Ukraine line, a 24% increase compared with2009. Tens of thousands of Ukrainians also made day trips into Israel, crossing over the Egyptian border or taking charter flights from Antalya, Turkey.

The price of a visa to Ukraine was anywhere between NIS 150 ($41) and NIS 4,650 ($1,265), depending on the type.

Currently, 31 weekly flights transport passengers  between the two nations, 16 of them operated by Aerosvit Airlines and six by El Al. Arkia is expected to launch two additional weekly flights in the coming months.

Israelis in Ukraine

Kiev, which lies on the banks of the Dnieper River, is abundant in attractions such as churches, museums, parks and Jewish sites. The ancient Kiev Monastery of the Caves is a major tourist attraction, as it the Lover’s Bridge in Kreshchatik Park, the perfect setting for a marriage proposal.

Another popular site is Mariinsky Park, where statues and fountains are plentiful. On the outskirts of Kiev is Babi Yar, the ravine where tens of thousands of Jews were massacred by Nazis in 1941.

According to Aerosvit Israel General Manager Avi Schwartz, approximately 100,000 Israelis traveled to Ukraine last year. Some 40,000 of them were Breslov followers, who went to Uman to visit Rebbe Nachman of Breslov’s tomb, while others went to visit families, took vacations or made business trips.

“The cancelation of visas will multiply the number of tourists traveling from Israel to Ukraine,” Schwartz said. “The high price of visas deterred many people who wanted to visit Ukraine but did not want to pay hundreds of shekels for an entry visa.”

Schwartz also mentioned that Ukraine is preparing to receive an increased number of visitors because it was chosen to host the Euro soccer championships in 2012. He noted that that the competition between airlines is driving flight prices down.

Eyeing visa-free travel, Turkey and Russia sign readmission deal

Turkish and Russian officials signed on Tuesday a readmission agreement, a step that brings the two countries closer to introducing a visa-free travel regime for their nationals.

The agreement on readmission of illegal immigrants was signed in Moscow, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday. The agreement will enter into force simultaneously with a visa exemption agreement that was signed in May 2010.

Thanks to this agreement, the fight against illegal migration was also included in the wide activities of cooperation between Turkey and Russia, the statement said. Officials expect illegal migration could become a bigger problem when Turks and Russians are allowed to travel without having to obtain a visa. Turkey, which seeks a visa exemption for its nationals in their travels to European Union countries, is still negotiating a deal with Brussels for the readmission of illegal migrants who transit Turkish territory to reach EU destinations.

Economic and political ties between Turkey and Russia have grown dramatically in the past years. Tourism is also booming as about 3 million Russians flock to Turkey every year, particularly to tourism destinations along the Mediterranean coast. The Foreign Ministry said the visa-free regime would help the two countries further improve their cultural and social ties as well as develop economic and commercial relations by boosting contacts between Turkish and Russian businessmen.

The decision to sign a readmission agreement, seen as the final obstacle before a visa-free regime, was made during a visit to Russia by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan last year.

The agreement was signed by Şakir Fakıllı, the director-general for consular affairs at the Foreign Ministry, and Russian Deputy Director of the Federal Migration Service Nikolay Smorodin in Moscow on Tuesday. Fakıllı said he hoped the ratification processes of both the visa exemption and readmission agreements would be completed in a short time so that visa-free travel could begin as soon as possible. The readmission agreement obliges the parties that signed the agreement to readmit persons who enter the other country illegally. Turkish Foreign Ministry officials said visa-free travel between Turkey and Russia could begin as soon as April.
