UAE imposes visa fees on Canadians
Canadians considering a vacation to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) may be put off by the Middle Eastern country’s decision to charge citizens up to CA$1,000 for visas.
Commencing earlier this week, the visa charges are questionable on account that the fee does not apply to any other Western country, The Globe and Mail reported.
The source said the UAE is back lashing against the Canadian government’s refusal to increase Dubai based carrier Etihad Airlines and Emirates landing rights in Canada.
In retaliation to Canada’s rejection, the UAE dispelled Canadian soldiers from a military base in Dubai late last year and even threatened to withdraw Canadian-made BlackBerry phones from the market, the source reported.
Up to 25,000 Canadian working and living in the UAE could be affected by the decision to change the policy.
According to the source, it is CA$250 for a 30 day visa, CA$500 for a three month visa and CA$1000 for a six month visa.
“The decision to impose visas on Canadians travelling to the UAE was made by the UAE in 2009 and is now being implemented,” Foreign Affairs Minister Lawrence Cannon spokesperson Melissa Lantsman said.
