Sri Lanka had withdrawn the on-arrival visa facility for 84 countries. So tourists from those countries will need a visa prior to arriving in Sri Lanka. The new system will be implemented from 30th September.

Foreigners visiting and traveling via Sri Lanka will be able to obtain visas through the website of the Department of Immigration and Emigration of Sri Lanka by personally applying for them. This system will be made compulsory for the tourists from those 84 countries from 2012 onward.

Sri Lanka has granted foreign tourists a 30-day visa on arrival since the 1970s as part of a move to promote tourism, but it was badly affected thereafter with the issues occurred in the country with the civil war. Last May, Sri Lanka scrapped the on-arrival visa facility given form Indian tourists. However, only tourists from Singapore and Maldives, countries which gives on-arrival visas to Lankans, will continue to get the reciprocal facility.

The ‘visa on arrival’ scheme, launched early last year to increase foreign tourist inflows, has been extended to citizens of six more countries from January this year.

The new countries added to the list of beneficiaries of this scheme are Cambodia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Philippines, Laos and Myanmar, said a government statement, adding between January and March 2905 visas were issued under this scheme.

The maximum number of visas under this scheme was issued at Delhi airport (1512), followed by Mumbai (759), Chennai (474) and Kolkata (160), the statement said.

According to a different release, the ‘Incredible India’ campaign has led to a surge in the number of foreign tourists visiting the country with more than 5 lakh visitors coming to India in March this year.

Thailand Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva today said India should grant visa on arrival to Thai tourists to boost two-way travel. “We hope that we will be able to get visa on arrival which is something that will boost the number of visitors here,” Vejjajiva told PTI after his meeting with industry leaders. He said that though his country went through a difficult period last year because of political unrest, Thailand received a record number of 16 million foreign visitors, including eight lakh Indians. “It seems that tourism is fully recovered, it is actually continuing to grow at a very healthy pace. What we actually need now is to do further facilitation,” he said.

Vejjajiva said that he had raised the issue of seeking visa on arrival for Thais with India’s Foreign Minister S M Krishna and would also take up the same with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Last year, about 50,000 Thai citizens came to India mainly to visit Budhists sites. In his meeting with members of leading business chambers – Ficci, Assocham and CII – it was emphasised that there should be direct flights between popular destinations of the two countries. Inviting investments from Indian companies, the Thai Prime Minister said that his country has shortage of skilled manpower and would seek cooperation in this area with India. “India is a workplace to some of those skills – language skills, IT skills that will help us to fill that gap…,” he said.

Asked what holds the two countries to sign the comprehensive free trade agreement, expanding from the limited pact, Vijajjiva said that he expects the FTA to be inked some time later this year. With Thailand due for elections in the next few months, its Parliament will be able to give its approval to the FTA only in the second half of this year. Thailand has witnessed anti-government violent protest in the recent past. However, the situation has improved and its economy is growing by a healthy 8 per cent. Meanwhile, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said that India is committed to concluding negotiations with Thailand for a free trade pact by this year-end, a step which will help in doubling bilateral trade of USD 6 billion by 2014.

India has extended the Tourist Visa on Arrival (TVOA) scheme to nationals of Cambodia, Vietnam, Philippines and Laos from January this year, taking the number of countries on the TVOA list to 15.

The visa on arrival scheme, originally introduced for the nationals of five countries, namely, Japan, Singapore, Finland, Luxembourg and New Zealand from 1 January 2010, has since been extended to tourists from Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and the Philippines with effect from 1 January 2011.

The number of visas issued under this scheme, during January 2011 for nationals of the eight out of nine countries were New Zealand (242), Finland (156), Japan (155), Singapore (125), Philippines (98), Luxembourg (6), Cambodia (4), and Vietnam (4). The maximum number of visas on arrival were issued at Delhi airport (406), followed by Mumbai (214), Chennai (137) and Kolkata (33).

India had, earlier this year, extended the Tourist Visa on Arrival (TVOA) scheme to nationals of Myanmar and Indonesia, taking the number of countries on the TVOA list to 11.

The scheme has been found to be useful by the foreign nationals and as per tourism ministry data 6,569 nationals have availed the facility of TVOA up to December 2010.

The TVOA is allowed for a maximum 30 days with single entry facility by the immigration officers at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata airports on payment of a fee of $60 or equivalent amount in Indian rupees per passenger (including children).

TVOA is allowed for a maximum of two times in a calendar year to a foreigner with a minimum gap of two months between each visit. TVOA is non-extendable and non-convertible.

The foreigners of the above mentioned countries might also avail of TVOA for up to 30 days for medical treatment, for casual business or to visit friends/relatives, etc.

The TVOA facility is not applicable to the holders of diplomatic/official passports. Further, TVOA will not be granted to the foreigners who have permanent residence or occupation in India as such persons can visit India on normal visa.

India on Tuesday extended the Tourist Visa-on-Arrival (TVOA) scheme to citizens of two more countries — Myanmar and Indonesia.

“The TVOA is non-extendable and non-convertible. The foreigners of these countries may also avail of such visa for up to 30 days for medical treatment, for casual business or to visit friends/relatives,” said the home ministry.

The TVOA facility is, however, not applicable to holders of diplomatic/official passports. Similarly, such visa will also not be granted to foreigners who have permanent residence or occupation in India. Such persons can visit India on normal visa, as applicable.

In order to promote tourism, the TVOA scheme was first introduced for nationals of five countries — Japan, Singapore, Finland, Luxembourg and New Zealand — on January 1, 2010. The government had later extended the scheme for nationals of four more countries — Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and Philippines — on January 1 this year.

The ministry said: “The scheme has been found to be useful by the foreign nationals. Total 6,569 nationals availed the facility of TVOA till December last year.”

Filipinos who plan their trips on short notice can start flying to India without the hassles of processing a visa in the Philippines.

The Indian government has announced that tourists from the Philippines, as well as from Cambodia, Laos, and Vietnam, may choose to process their Indian visas even after they have landed. Since the start of the year, India has implemented its visa on arrival scheme to attract more Southeast Asian tourists.

To complement this move, Philippine Airlines has announced it has begun to fly six times weekly from Manila to New Delhi and back. Their operations include three nonstop flights between the two capitals and three flights routed via Bangkok.

In a statement, the Indian Embassy in Manila explained that visas-on-arrival will be valid for a maximum of 30 days. The embassy added that a tourist can avail of a visa-on-arrival twice a year at the most, with each visit spaced by at least two months.

The visa, which will be processed at a fee of $60, is non-extendable and non-convertible.

To get the visa, Filipino tourists must carry passports valid for six months at least, or re-entry permits. They must also present a proof of availability of funds to spend in India, and a confirmed ticket guaranteeing they will leave the country within 30 days.

Ineligible are Filipinos who reside or work in India, who hold diplomatic or official passports, or who have been declared persona non grata or blacklisted by the government of India.

As many as 6,549 tourists from five countries visited India in 2010 by availing the visa on arrival scheme, the tourism ministry said Friday.

The visa on arrival scheme was introduced Jan 1, 2010 for citizens of five countries – Finland, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand and Singapore.

According to a ministry statement, 1,944 tourists from New Zealand, 1,814 from Singapore, 1,457 from Japan, 1,263 from Finland and 71 from Luxembourg availed this scheme.

In December alone, 905 such visas were issued. The country-wise break up was New Zealand (340), Japan (216), Singapore (191), Finland (140) and Luxembourg (18).

The maximum number of such visas was issued at the Delhi airport – 3,493. This was followed by Mumbai – 1,511, Chennai – 1,211 and Kolkata — 334.

Last month, the home ministry announced that tourists from Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam and the Philippines can also avail the visa scheme from Jan 1, 2011.

Tourists from the Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar can now avail visa on arrival in India.

The Indian Consulate in Dubai on Tuesday announced that the Government of India has decided to extend the ‘Tourist Visa-on-Arrival’ scheme to people from the Philippines, Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar with effect from January 1. Tourist visa on arrival in India will be granted to nationals from these five countries by the immigration officers at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata Airports only, the Consulate said in a press release.

These visas will be valid for a maximum of 30 days with single entry facility. Tourist Visa-on-Arrival Scheme for citizens of Finland, Japan, Luxembourg, New Zealand and Singapore has already been in place since January 1, 2010, it added.

The government has decided to extend visa on arrival facility to Buddhist pilgrims coming from five more ASEAN countries-Cambodia, Philippines, Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar.

The scheme would be operational from January 1,2011,” the Ministry of Tourism has said.

The single-entry visa, to be issued at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Kolkata airports, will ne valid for a month.

“The decision was taken after due discussion with the ministries of External Affairs and Home. A formal announcement in this regard will be made soon,” an official said.

It is expected that this facility will attract more Buddhist pilgrims.

Earlier, Singapore, New Zealand, Japan, Finland and Luxembourg were extended the visa on arrival facility.

The International Finance Corporation and the Ministry of Tourism have inked an agreement under which the IFC has been given the responsibility of developing the Buddhist circuit in India.
